Groh Biography

Grøh (グロー, Gurō) is a brand new character in the Soul series of fighting games. He appeared in the game Soulcalibur VI, which marks his debut appearance in the new Soul series as a whole. He is the first Nordic character depicted by the series.

 

He is nicknamed The Agent in Black (黒衣の密使 Kokui no Missh).

Groh has the unique distinction of being both a quintessential anime protagonist edgelord and  the quintessential beginner character, as confirmed by the devs. He features a simple yet effective movelist centered around evasive tech step attacks and his Avenger stance, which leads to a strong mix-up and lots of potential damage. He also has an especially powerful Soul Charge which grants new stance attacks, teleports, and more attacks including a damaging low attack throw. Outside of stance he rewards careful neutral game with good range and frames on quick AA/BB generic attacks, allowing him to get in and work towards the bigger stance mix-ups and powerful break attacks. His oki and stance options require some commitments to unsafe/steppable attacks, and players with strong defense will defend against them and punish Groh heavily. On top of this his limited lows and throw game can make it hard to crack the enemy’s guard.

-high risk Avenger options limits its effectiveness versus a strong defense

 

Unique mechanic: 

Groh will verbally call out the name of many of his attacks, with fan favorites like Guilt Seeker (SC 1AK) or Scarlet Sleeve (A+B). This has no actual impact on gameplay outside of players with really keen reactions and hearing reacting to his callouts rather than the attack animations.

Season 2:

While he lost his crazy 66AA evasive knockdown/wall splat/ring out tool, Groh gained a lot of new tools to complement his medium range neutral and stance game. His Soul Charge also gained some new strong moves, and he continues to have huge damage potential and comeback factor when spending a meter. His Soul Attack is a standard combo ender that allows him to get into Soul Charge straight into a mixup–much better than pushing them away with the SC burst.

New moves:

a6: A high horizontal with great range. Only -2 on block and on hit leaves the enemy backturned, allowing Groh to get in and apply more pressure.

236B: You’ll know it when you see it or hear him yell “LIGHTNING BLADE!” This gives Groh a better i18 punisher from crouch and a very long range whiff punisher. It is high and unfortunately quite inconsistent on landing on enemies in attack animations, so it is not very effective as a sidestep whiff punisher. Safe on block.

SC 236B: The frames are the same but on hit in Soul Charge this move becomes CAMELOT’S RUSE, a devastating attack throw.

3A+B: An i20 tracking low. Limited range but still very useful for Groh when compared to his Season 1 low selection.

33_66_99AB: 66AA now only leads to a knockdown (and no wall splat) on counter hit. To knockdown on normal hit, Groh must use this new move which is very unsafe at -16. It also does not wall splat. The evasive properties are still intact from Season 1.

11_44_77kA: A new tracking high low string. It travels very far and is only slightly unsafe at -12. It is possible to duck the low on reaction after blocking the high but both hits are guaranteed on counter hit.

AVG KA: The old AVG K is gone. The new AVG K is minus on hit when looping back into AVG but does not push back like the old one, and has a built-in high follow-up. Both hits only guaranteed on CH.

AVG BK: This new kick leads to a guard break, wall splat, or ring out. It is guaranteed on normal hit but -12 on block.

SC AVG KAK: Gives the SoN K teleport kick to the end of AVG KA.

SC AVG BKB: Gives the new 236B stab to the end of AVG BK, though it does not trigger the attack animation. Devastating and a normal hit combo.

Other key changes:

-44A is now much greatly improved on hit, on block, and the aGI versus verticals is easier to use

-66A+B is now only -12 on block, and with its significant pushback this move is now difficult to punish

-SC 1AK does less damage but gained a post-GI lethal hit. The LH combo is very weak and just brings the move back to the pre-nerf damage value.
