Astaroth Biography

Astaroth (アスタロス Asutarosu) is a fictional character in the Soulcalibur series of video games. Created by Namco’s Project Soul division, he first appeared in the original Soulcalibur and its subsequent sequels, later appearing in various merchandise related to the series. He is voiced in Japanese by Banjō Ginga for Soulcalibur and Ryūzaburō Ōtomo in later titles; in all English-language versions of Soulcalibur II, Astaroth was voiced by Jay S. Gilbert.

Introduced in Soulcalibur, Astaroth is a golem created by a cult worshiping the Greek god of war Ares to locate a cursed sword named “Soul Edge”. Though Astaroth has consistently pursued the sword, his character has changed as the series progresses, eventually transforming into a power hungering creature desiring to consume the sword. Regarded as an iconic character of the series, Astaroth has been noted as fitting a large character stereotype seen in fighting games, featuring strong attacks but slow speed. Astaroth has been described as having easy-to-master gameplay and being popular with fans of strong, hard-hitting characters in fighting games.

Astaroth, created by a cult who worshipped the Greek god Ares to locate Soul Edge, returns with his giant axe in-hand and a deadly attitude in tow. Swinging his giant axe with great strength, only the most skilled warriors stand a chance before Astaroth in the arena of battle. Astute opponents may be able to exploit Astaroth’s lumbering speed to their own advantage with quick strikes and dodges. Weak opponents should just prepare for destruction.

Astaroth is somewhat identical in appearance to his original timeline counterpart, though with dark gray skin and an exaggerated physique featuring a massive upper torso supported by rather average, if not thin legs. The scars from his core also stretch over to his backside.

Like his original counterpart, Astaroth is a psychotic and bloodthirsty warrior who relishes at the sight and sound of death, using any excuse he can to maim anyone in his way who aggravates him, which is most often. Unlike before though, the memories of fallen warriors implanted in Astaroth has given him heightened intelligence and clarity and takes great joy and satisfaction in fooling his enemies into thinking he is a dim-witted brute when in reality he is much more cunning than he appears.

Astaroth’s clothing is similar to his original counterpart though his armor is a bit oversized in comparison. He also now wears a collar fashioned after a snake, the symbol of Fygul Cestemus. His second outfit recolors his armor gold and silver and his skin jet black with red eyes. His third outfit, added in v1.40, recolors his armor brown and gold and his skin green while retaining his white eyes. His fourth outfit, added in v1.40, is a tribute to his classic look from the original game: His skin becomes brown and he doesn’t wear a collar.

Help, i can’t do Howling spirits! (aka SE BBBBB)

This is historically one of the toughest attacks to pull off, let alone performing it in consistently mid match.

SE BBBBB is also known as the 5-hit JF. It’s a very powerful attack available from Serpents Embrace (SE), dealing a tons of damage, and ending in a Guard Break attack, leaving Ivy +12 if it’s blocked.

It’s able to add anywhere from 12-24 extra damage to many of her Lethal Hit combos as well if you manage to pull it off instead of mashing out Mistress Justice. (SE BBB)

There is no reason to avoid Ivy because of this attack, but be weary, you are -16 instead of +12 on block without the JF!

If you want to be optimal, then you will need to invest time into this attack.
Going into training mode and training it something like 10mn of it everyday is the best solution to learn it quickly!

What’s the deal with her low throw?

2_3A+G is a new attack Ivy has which is a low mid_full screen attack throw. It can be blocked by crouching, dodged by jumping and more importantly, doesn’t track so it can be stepped.
It can cause wall splats, as well as ring out when close enough to the edge, except for low walls in certain stages such as the Eurydice Shrine.

Having a low that catches mid and far range is part of what completes her long distance map control game.
Without it, opponents would be able to advance on you by guarding mindlessly.
It’s important to learn what attacks land your opponent in range of this attack’s 2 distances. It’s useful as a mix-up with 2_3B+K, as they both need to be blocked differently.

If your opponent blocks the 2_3B+K option while crouching, it will cause a Lethal Hit which can lead to ~100 damage.
What makes this even more powerful, is that this attack is generally safe to use when it is guarded (-14 on block), because of it’s range.
It’s also a very good whiff punish!
